Ian Burks, CEO, YMCA East Surrey

Ian Burks has been CEO at YMCA East Surrey for 15 years and prior to this worked for 13 years at Hornsey YMCA (now YMCA North London) as Programme Director. Ian holds a Masters in Leisure Management, a CIH Level 4 Diploma in Supported Housing and a Post Graduate Diploma in Management Studies. He is also a qualified Fitness Instructor, an NVQ Assessor and a Gymnastics Club Coach holding a range of sporting coaching qualifications, including Boccia and Goal Ball.

Ian lives in Reigate and is married with three grown-up children. Keen on physical activity and outdoor pursuits, Ian has run many marathons including Brighton and London Marathon where he ran a personal best time of 2hrs 42mins.

The story so far

Ian’s major work achievements include the redevelopment of three major sports facilities funded by the Sport England Lottery Capital Projects Fund. These include the creation of Hillbrook House, a Supported Housing Scheme accommodating 44 young homeless people in Redhill, and transforming the YMCA Sovereign Centre into a state-of-the-art building specifically designed for local children and young people with disabilities.

Not one to rest on his laurels, Ian is now preparing to initiate the redevelopment of the outside pitch area at the YMCA Sports and Community Centre in Princes Road, Redhill to provide a modern inclusive sports facility which will offer adults and young people with disabilities even more activity sessions to enjoy at the YMCA.

Leading by example!

Ian is a keen participant in the YMCA Challenge event programme to raise money for YMCA East Surrey’s charitable work and hopes to inspire others to do the same.

As well as climbing, running and skydiving, Ian has completed many cycle challenges such as cycling from Lands End to John O’Groats, to Belgium on a tandem with his wife, from Redhill to Montpelier and Gibraltar and cycling 175 miles from Redhill to Paris in 21 hours on a fixed wheel bike. In October 2015, Ian completed an Ironman in Barcelona in an incredible 10hrs 49 minutes.

Ian has been instrumental in building a strong and dedicated team of volunteers which keep Challenge costs to a minimum, ensuring that events are inclusive and all money raised goes directly to our many worthy YMCA projects.
