Chase the Sun
Saturday 22 – Sunday 23 June 2019
Online bookings for this event have now closed. If you are interested in this event please contact a member of the Challenge Team.
A unique team cycling challenge cycle – the longest day, from sunrise to sunset, coast to coast, east to west, 205 miles in 17 hours. This year the YMCA is supporting corporate teams to take on this epic adventure.
Chase the Sun is a mass participation national event organised by volunteers that attracts over 600 riders from across Britain. Many riders choose to use the event to raise money for charities and YMCA East Surrey are hoping you will join us to help support young people facing emotional wellbeing issues. Although the actual event is free the YMCA is charging £149 per person to cover transport, refreshments, accommodation, bespoke cycle shirt and support stops. This event is open to ages 18+.
We give you…
- Bespoke YMCA Chase the Sun Cycle Shirt
- Commemorative medal
- Transport to start
- One night’s accommodation at finish
- Transport home
- Full catering and broom wagon support en route
- Free induction in our fully equipped air conditioned gym
- A tick on your bucket list
You give us…
- £149 entry fee
- Pledge to raise money for our youth counselling projects across East Surrey
This year, all money raised from the YMCA Chase the Sun cycle event will go directly to support young people who are suffering with mental health issues. YMCA East Surrey Heads Together provides a free and confidential counselling service for young people aged 14 -24. We help over 600 individuals every year in East Surrey to deal with issues such as: sadness, depression, unhappiness and when life doesn’t seem worth living. Qualified YMCA counsellors help young people overcome issues such as bereavement, experience of abuse, self-harm or substance misuse.
Please help us keep this vital service going by taking part in Chase the Sun.
The pre-event information evening takes place on Wednesday 29 May at our YMCA Sovereign Centre in Woodhatch.
We organise a variety of cycling sessions that are tailored to build mileage for each of our cycling challenge events.
Tuesday evening cycle training
Subject to volunteer leaders available, we endeavour to offer three rides per week on Tuesday evenings. Rides are free and all are welcome, even if you are not taking part in an event.
Tuesdays | 18:30
Meet at: YMCA Sports and Community Centre, Redhill, RH1 6JJ
• Beginners 10 miles at average 8-10 mph
• Intermediate 15 miles plus at average 10-13 mph
• Experienced 25- 35 miles at 14- 15mph
All rides are carried out at participants own risk. All cyclists must wear a helmet, bring a drink and be aware that rides are on public roads and road bikes or hybrids bikes are most suitable.
Sunday cycle training
We also organise Sunday training rides once a month.
We would also encourage cyclists to join a cycle club, if not a member already where training sessions are available every week. The nearest one to us is Redhill Cycling Club. Local club Team Cake also take regular social rides, information for which can be found on their Facebook Page.
