WAVES is a youth club making a difference, aiming to raise awareness of mental health issues and provide peer support for young people in need. Money raised from this event will provide more opportunities for young people aged 13 to 19 to attend WAVES youth club sessions, take part in positive mental health activities and talk to other young people and YMCA staff about mental health to gain support.
In recent years it has come to light how many young people at one stage or another have suffered with their mental health with statistics showing that 1 in 5 young people experience symptoms of anxiety, depression and issues with body confidence and 1 in 10 have a diagnosable mental health issue. However, in recent months’ mental health professionals have come forward saying that the numbers of young people in need of support are even higher. At WAVES we believe it is important to provide safe where young people can start discussing mental health is a positive and constructive way.
£20 will provide cooking materials for WAVES weekly sessions, supporting young people in creating snacks.
£50 will provide a mental health youth worker for one session.
£100 will provide a supported space for a young person with mental health to attend summer trips.
I have never been to a youth club group before outside of school because I never felt I fitted in and I was too anxious to take part in anything. WAVES is perfect for me. I have made new friends who I know will support me and have learnt a lot. Thank you WAVES!
