Last month, we were delighted to attend @reigatebanstead's Community Asset Transfer event, where we celebrated securing a 30-year lease for the YMCA Sovereign Centre and Pageant Hut through the Community Asset Transfer scheme.

We're also grateful to receive a grant of just under £300,000 to help improve the YMCA Sovereign Centre, ensuring it remains a welcoming and accessible space for local people.

This investment secures the future of the centre for years to come. Thank you to Reigate & Banstead Borough Council for helping us protect this important community asset.

World Mental Health Day - 10th October 2026

This year World Mental Health Day is all about the power of being heard. It's a simple tool with a powerful effect.

Being heard allows us to feel understood, supported, more able to cope and more confident to reach out for support. Being heard starts with active listening.

YMCA East Surrey's Emotional Wellbeing and Mental Health team asks you: How do you listen?

Try our top tips:

• Create space and time to give your full attention and connect
• Listen without judgement
• Show empathy
• Acknowledge and validate others' feelings and accept that they might be different to your own
• Reflect back what you have heard to show your understanding
• Try not to fix! You don't need to have an answer or a solution
• Support and empower others to think about what might help them
• Look after yourself and acknowledge your own feelings when you listen to others
