Exercise Referral

YMCA East Surrey’s Exercise Referral programme enables people with a chronic health condition, are rehabilitating from an injury, illness or have a disability to engage in physical activity and lead a healthier, independent, more active lifestyle.

As Exercise Referral is a specific intervention, referrals must be authorised by GPs, primary care practitioners and hospital staff.

John’s story

Why Physical Activity?

The benefits of exercise can significantly improve one’s physical wellbeing, as well as life expectancy.

It helps:

  • manage weight and weight loss
  • strengthen bones and muscles
  • regulate blood pressure
  • improve respiratory function
  • maintain or improve mobility and flexibility
  • reduce sedentary behaviour.

It can also prevent or manage:

  • cardiovascular disease
  • type 2 diabetes
  • cholesterol
  • the risk of falling as an older adult.

Physical activity also has a positive effect on an individual’s mental wellbeing. It increases mood, relaxation and release from daily stress and anxiety.

What’s more, by getting out the house, meeting new people and working towards personal goals, exercise can give people a renewed sense of purpose in life.

Staff

Our Exercise Referral instructors are specially trained to support people of any disability or health condition and help them improve their mobility, stamina, strength and co-ordination in a safe and supportive environment. Staff are also qualified to a high standard, including Level 4 British Association of Cardiac Prevention Rehabilitation (BACPR), specialising in working with people recovering from heart conditions to take exercise, which is proven to reduce the likelihood of further attacks.

We also offer One to One Exercise Referral gym sessions for clients who need specific training, support or encouragement.

Cost

We offer several payment options, from pay-as-you-go to monthly memberships, with various rates dependant on personal circumstances.
